2015 Black Sage Vineyard Meritage
There are plenty of cassis, blackberries, vanilla, dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes on the nose. The palate displays luscious blackberries, rich dark plums, smoky toasted notes and a lengthy finish of dark chocolate. The aciditiy is well balanced with the rich full tannins in this full bodied wine.
The hot dry summer of 2015 brought the earliest harvest on record for us in the Okanagan Valley. This vintage saw some concerns due to the fires in the area as well as in Washington State. No ill effects were seen from these events as the smoke came and went in a matter of days, and the Black Sage Vineyard was not impacted. The cool evenings arrived and slowed down the ripening process, allowing the fruit some extra hang time. All in all, 2015 was an outstanding harvest.
The grapes were fermented in small batch open top stainless steel tanks and were punched down twice daily. They were left on the skins for 15 days for extra extraction of colour and flavours. Secondary malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. The wines were aged in a careful selection of new and 1 year old (80% French and 20% American) barrels. After an intensive selection process only the 10 best barrels were selected to be in the final blend: Merlot 4 barrels; Cab Sauv 3 barrels; Cab Franc 3 barrels; splash of Petit Verdot.
